LogoSY Colona IIThe SY Colona II

The SY Colona II heads out into the Mergui Archipelago of Burma to explore the new and wonderful dive sites that have been discovered there.

Your Captain
: Norwegian Freddy Storheil and his faithful yacht COLONA II have been around for over 20 years. "Around" can be taken literally as they have circumnavigated the world together twice. Chartering started in 1977 in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, then literally consisting of one hut on the beach, now a bustling dive resort, famous worldwide. COLONA II was probably the first yacht ever to enable divers to take out trips to Southern Egypt, Sudan, Yemen, and Djibouti as well as being the first to dive many of the sites that are now world-famous.

Whilst undertaking his
circumnavigation’s Freddy has dived and sailed in places that would fill us all with envy: many of the Pacific ISY Colona II Side Viewslands, Maldives, Caribbean, Chagos, Red Sea etc. We are dealing with one experienced captain here! He sailed COLONA II here in 1995 and he and Kim have been making sailing-and diving trips since then. Many of their old guests as well as new ones have been taken to the finest places on the Andaman coasts.

Most of the diving is still of the exploratory kind but exciting new sites have already been discovered. The outer edges of the dive area almost border on the famous Burma Banks and the diving off, for example, Black Rock and North & South Twin Islands, has proven to be at least as good as that on the famous Banks. Preliminary dives in and around the archipelago have so far yielded minke whales, silvertip sharks, numerous manta rays and a couple of seamounts which should be excellent for Whale sharks. The small life is rich enough to keep any macro photographer happy. It is excellent to dive virgin reefs teeming with life and there will be no other boat in sight. Overcrowding is certainly not an issue here!
