Asian Adventures and Sunsail are now offering RYA Competent Crew, Day Skipper and Coastal Skipper Practical Sailing Courses from our base in Phuket, Thailand.

The courses are internationally recognized and are designed for the novice to intermediate individual with limited or no sailing experience. Open up a whole new world of sailing today!

The Yacht Base

The courses are run from the Boat Lagoon at Sepam Bay on Phuket Island which features all the necessary facilities a yachtsman could need. Phuket Island is a fantastic mix of secluded bays and beaches, sophisticated hotels, countless types of restaurants and some lively nightlife in the towns of Phuket and Patong.


Your accommodation on our luxurious yachts is included in the course price. If you wish to extend your trip to see more of this wonderful country, we can arrange a suitable hotel for before and after your course.

Prices and Dates

The course price is 20,000 Thai Baht and the courses run from May till October starting weekly on Sunday evenings at 1700 hours and finishing on Friday evenings at 1700 hours. The price includes Tuition by an RYA Qualified Instructor. Food - breakfasts, lunches and three evening meals. Drinking Water. Accommodation on board, including linen.

Course Outlines

The RYA Competence Crew Course: This course introduces the complete beginner to cruising under sail, following the RYA syllabus. Upon completion you should feel confident in taking an active role in yacht cruising. The course covers: sea terms, sails, ropework, fire precautions, safety, man overboard, distress, dinghies, weather, rules of the road, helmanship and sailing.

The RYA Day Skipper Course: Designed for individuals with a Competent Crew Certificate or equivalent experience, this course is a popular and effective way to improve your sailing skills. You will learn how to pilot and navigate a yacht in familiar waters at all times. Gain advances sailing skills including mooring a boat, interpreting shipping forecasts and dealing with emergency situations.

RYA Coastal Skipper Course Completion Certificate: This course is designed for individuals who have been in charge of a sailing yacht in tidal waters and have completed several passages by day and night. Become a truly accomplished skipper, develop your ability to manage a crew and improve your navigation skills. Competent day skippers will love moving on to extended cruising in unfamiliar waters. Facing more challenging sailing conditions for a longer period of time.

The RYA certificate requires: 20 days, 12 night hours and 2 days as skipper- we will cover approximately a quarter of these requirements in this course. RYA Information – What you may need.

Please read - The details below may give you a few ideas of what you may need to bring for your RYA course, where you may go and any other extras that may be handy.

What you may need to Bring

  • Suntan cream (remember the sun when out sailing is a lot more powerful due to reflections from the sea).
  • A Hat.
  • Long sleeved top and light trousers if you catch the sun easily.
  • If you have a Sailing Log book please bring with you.
  • You will eat ashore on a couple of occasions, so bring some appropriate clothes.
  • Wet weather jacket or raincoat (hopefully won’t be needed).
  • A big Smile & your listening ears.

Sailing Route

 The Itinerary for the trip may change depending on the course that you are participating in. There is a set syllabus for the courses but the areas that you will be sailing include, Phang Nga bay with the fabled Limestone columns, Krabi province, Phi Phi island and the south of Phuket. This is generally renowned as some of the most spectacular cruising waters in the world.

 The appropriate course notes are always good reading before joining the course. These can be purchased through Sunsail Thailand (500 Baht) and posted to you prior to the course.


The course starts officially at 17.00 on Sunday, although the boat will not leave the Marina until Monday morning. You are more than welcome to stay aboard the yacht on the Sunday night but it can get quite warm while moored in the Marina, as it is land locked. There is a Hotel in the Marina called the Phuket Boat Lagoon Resort, we can book room(s) for you if you wish. The rates are 2,500 – 3,000 Baht depending on the View (either Canal View or Marina View respectively). If you would like room(s) we do need to know as early as possible. Should you wish to stay in another part of the island we ask that you contact us on arrival to confirm meeting and departure times for the course.

Food and provisioning

 Included in your course price are all breakfasts, lunches and 3 evening meals with soft drinks (Usually water and coke – Full fat version...). Should you need that little extra, such as marmite or chocolate, feel free to bring them along. There will be options to eat ashore during the week but you will be on board for a least 2 nights.

 Health & Dietary Needs

If you have any special needs for Diet or health please ensure that we know well before the course begins. We need to ensure that the boat is equipped properly.

 A transfer from the airport to the base can be arranged, if you would like to use this service we just need your arrival details at Phuket airport. We will have one of our drivers waiting for you with transport  to bring you directly to the Marina.
